Living on a volcanic plateau, much of our work has focused on understanding our infrastructure vulnerability to volcanic hazards and improving our ability to respond and recover.
The Volcanic Impacts Study Group (VISG) has initiated and undertaken much of this work, which includes:
These posters have so far been developed for electricity, airports, roads and water supply. Download the posters below.
Provides information to allow agencies to understand the health and safety issues for their staff working in a volcanic ash environment and provides advice on steps employers and staff can take to keep themselves safe in varying levels of ash exposure (e.g. what safety equipment is needed; what safety procedures need to be followed). This report carried out research and modeling to assess the impact of volcanic ash and the chemical compounds on Auckland's water supply. A number of mitigation measures were recommended. Download the pdf report here .... SR 2004-25 Ash impacts to Auckland water supplies Part I small.pdf
This was one of the earlier AELG studies which looked at the impacts of ash on lifeline utilities (much of this work has been superceded by the above reports). The report also looked at the likely quantity and properties of ash that may require removal and clean-up from the Auckland region, identified methods of collecting and transporting ash and related environmental and legal issues.
